Family law deals with many issues that affect families, such as parenting, child protection, financial support, and separation. In Nunavut, all family law matters are handled by the Nunavut Court of Justice. Justices of the Peace (JPs) may also hear some cases, such as those involving custody, support, and temporary child protection orders.

Family law helps people settle disputes about:

  • Parenting and custody
  • Child and spousal support
  • Separation and divorce
  • Child welfare and protection
  • Who can stay in the family home
  • Restraining orders for safety

If you qualify, the Nunavut Legal Services Board can provide legal aid to help with family law matters.
