The appointment of persons wishing to serve as a Justice of Peace (JP) in Iqaluit or the communities is governed by the Justice of the Peace policy document below. You will also find below the required documents that must be reviewed and understood in order to apply to be a JP for the Nunavut Courts.

In order to serve as a JP, you should possess the following:

  • Good common sense
  • A strong sense of fairness
  • An ability to listen to all sides of a matter
  • A respect for people from all walks of life regardless of sex, race or social standing. Strong values in regard to right and wrong
  • An ability to speak a second Nunavut language is a plus, however, it is not mandatory

*Please note the ad hoc appointment committee contemplated by the Justice of the Peace Policy has not been established, as the Government of Nunavut assured the Court in 2013 that the Justice of the Peace Act will quickly be amended to create a formal appointment and remuneration committee.
