Justice of the Peace Training Levels
Justices of the Peace in Nunavut are community-based lay judges who perform judicial and quasi-judicial functions, often on a part-time basis.
Responsibilities
JPs handle summary conviction matters from territorial statutes, municipal bylaws, and selected criminal offenses. Their responsibilities include:
- First appearance and bail hearings
- Issuing warrants and summonses
- Administering oaths and affirmations
Training Levels
JPs progress through training levels that expand their jurisdiction and responsibilities. Training is provided by the Nunavut Court of Justice in partnership with justice system partners.
Full-Time JPs
Nunavut employs two full-time JPs:
- Senior JP - Manages the program and hears cases
- FAIA JP - Administers the Family Abuse Intervention Act
