Justices of the Peace

Justices of the Peace in Nunavut are community-based lay judges who perform judicial and quasi-judicial functions, often on a part-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • First appearance and bail hearings
  • Issuing warrants and summonses
  • Summary conviction matters from territorial statutes and municipal bylaws

Full-Time Justices

Nunavut employs two full-time JPs: a Senior JP who manages the program and hears cases, and a FAIA JP who administers the Family Abuse Intervention Act.
