Attending court can feel overwhelming, but being prepared can help. Here’s a helpful list of things to know and do to feel more confident and ensure you follow the proper protocols.

  • Arrive early.
  • Standing for the Judge: When the judge enters or leaves the courtroom, everyone must stand. The court clerk will say, “All rise” when the judge enters. Stay standing until the judge tells everyone to be seated.
  • After the Judge Leaves: When the judge leaves, stand until the lawyers begin to gather their things.
  • Show Respect: When the judge takes the bench, a nod of your head toward the judge is suggested.
  • If You Arrive Late: Enter quietly, take the nearest available seat, and give a small nod to the judge as you settle in.
  • Do not make any noise.
  • Do not put your feet on the chairs or benches.
  • Do not drape jackets and parkas over the back of the chairs/benches.
