- File a Notice of Claim at the Sheriff’s Department. The filing fee is $75.
- The Sheriff’s Department serves the Notice on the defendant (the person you are claiming against).
- The defendant has 30 days to file a Reply after receiving the Notice of Claim.
- If the defendant does not respond, the claimant (the person who filed the claim) can ask the court for a default judgment (a decision made without a hearing).
- The court will schedule mandatory mediation to help the parties settle. If a settlement is not possible, mediation helps prepare for trial.
