  1. File a Notice of Claim at the Sheriff’s Department. The filing fee is $75.
  2. The Sheriff’s Department serves the Notice on the defendant (the person you are claiming against).
  3. The defendant has 30 days to file a Reply after receiving the Notice of Claim.
  4. If the defendant does not respond, the claimant (the person who filed the claim) can ask the court for a default judgment (a decision made without a hearing).
  5. The court will schedule mandatory mediation to help the parties settle. If a settlement is not possible, mediation helps prepare for trial.
