In Nunavut, the main court is the Nunavut Court of Justice, which handles adult criminal matters.
Even though the process is the same in many ways across Canada, some things may work differently in Nunavut because of language (Inuktut, English, French), community circuits of the court, and geography.
- Always take seriously any court date you are given. Missing a court appearance can cause extra problems.
- If you don’t fully understand what’s happening (for example, your rights or the documents you receive), you should ask a lawyer or legal aid. It’s important you have the information you need.
- Bring any notices, documents or letters you got to the court. Also bring ID if you can.
- Be aware of whether you’re allowed to go free until your court date, or whether you are in custody. If you’re free, there may be conditions (rules) you must follow. If you’re in custody, everything is more urgent.
