When married or common-law couples separate or divorce, one spouse may have to provide financial support to the other and their children if they have any.

You may be entitled to support for you and/or your children when:

  • The court has ordered your former spouse to pay you money, which is called spousal support.
  • A court order states that the other parent must pay child support to you for their children.
  • You have entered into an agreement with your former spouse that they will provide support payments to you.

The Family Support Program helps collect court-ordered child and spousal support for the custodial parent and their dependents. The Family Support Office runs the program in Iqaluit.
