Crimes are covered under the Criminal Code of Canada, but youth are treated differently from adults. The law knows that young people are still developing, so it focuses more on rehabilitation instead of punishment. It also provides support for families and communities and has a deep respect for culture and individual needs. The goal is to integrate the youth back into the community and repair harm that has been done.

The law for youth aged 12 to 17 is called the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). People over 18 go through the adult system, while children under 12 cannot be charged with a crime.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act:

  • Holds youth accountable for their actions
  • Helps them take responsibility and work to make positive changes
  • Assists in preventing future crimes by addressing the reasons behind the behaviour
  • Parents are encouraged to take part and support their child through the process.
